So, about six weeks ago, I had the not so wonderful news of being diagnosed with diabetes. The diagnosis explained why I had been feeling so sluggish, tired, drained, etc, for about a year... maybe longer. I guess what made it shocking kind of was that I thought I knew all the signs of diabetes. My ex is type 1 and my step-father was type 2. That's why I was really surprised at myself for going such a long time and never realizing my blood sugar was high. And it wasn't like I didn't have the means in that year or ... Naming Your Characters
It sounds rather simple, naming a character. But it's not always easy coming up with the perfect name for the imperfect character. So what's a writer to do? How does a writer decide what name to attach to a character, and why? Let's start with the obvious. Characters need names, just as real people do. When a baby is born, there is no way for the happy parents to really know what personality the child will develop as they grow. Even genetics won't give the full picture. So they decide on a name for the baby, and that's it. There are untold ... Read More about Naming Your Characters

Making Your Characters Realistic
You've read them before, many times. Blah or boring, perfect and flawless, too good to be true, obviously fake characters. So what can you do to take a different path? To make your characters come to life, seem real, appeal to the reader's emotions? The answer is rather simple, though it often escapes the best of writers. To make your characters human and real, give them real emotions, real feelings. Ideas? Heartbreak, even death, is real. Try job loss, promotions, marriage, divorce, even the affair. Does your ...
